Why Every Student Needs a Budget, Even If You’re Broke 😩💸
Let’s be honest: being a student in Nigeria is already a budgeting course on its own 😂. Between class stress, hostel wahala, data bundles, and trying to not look like your problems, money is always in survival mode.
But here’s the truth nobody really tells you: you need a budget — especially when you’re broke. Sounds weird, right? Like, “Why should I budget my 2k when it’s not even enough?” Well, that’s exactly why.
When you have plenty money, you don’t think twice before spending. But when you have little, every naira needs direction or it’ll vanish on vibes. Trust me, those “just 500 naira” moments add up FAST 💀
Without a budget, you’ll:
– Spend randomly
– Buy things you don’t need
– Forget important stuff (like handouts, assignments or food 😭)
– And end up shocked when your account balance says “God will provide”
With a budget, you’re not “restricting” yourself — you’re just telling your money where to go so it doesn’t embarrass you 😅. It’s the difference between:
👉🏽 Buying data once and managing it
vs
👉🏽 Subscribing 3 times a week because of YouTube and TikTok cravings.
And no, budgeting doesn’t mean writing Excel sheets with formulas like a finance guru 😭. It can be as simple as:
- Listing your monthly/weekly allowance
- Splitting it into categories: food, transport, data, personal stuff, savings (yes, small savings is still savings)
- Sticking to it as best as you can
- Adjusting when needed (life happens!)
Even if you're not getting regular allowance, budgeting teaches you discipline, planning and prioritizing. Skills that will save you from adulting disgrace later in life.
So next time you get that alert (even if it’s just 1k), pause… breathe… and ask yourself:
“How do I make this money serve me?”
It’s not about how much you have — it’s about how well you use it.
Start small. Start messy. Just start. Your future self (and your pocket) will thank you 🙌🏽🧠
